What are the various types of UK benefit you could apply for?
One of the most inspiring things about the UK is the support it provides to those in need. The various benefits people can apply for when at a low ebb is a great example of this. Through these benefits, people who might be struggling financially can get the assistance they need to survive. If you are not familiar with the benefits system though, you might wonder what benefits are available and what they are for. To make things a bit clearer, we run through some of the most useful below.
Although it has been in place a little while now, Universal Credit is still a relatively new benefit scheme. In simple terms, it took 6 individual social welfare benefits and replaced them with 1 single monthly payment. Designed to help those on low income or who are out of work, applying for this benefit requires completion of an application form plus evidence to back up your claim.
Many people think that housing benefit no longer exists and has been scooped up in the Universal Credit scheme. While this is true for most people, some can still apply for individual housing benefit payments. If you and your partner are at state pension age for example, you can apply for it still. You can also claim it if you are living in temporary accommodation or sheltered housing.
The two types of tax credits you will come across are Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit. Child Tax Credit sees those responsible for kids getting paid additional money, as well as child benefit. Working Tax Credits are for those who are working but on a low income.
Carer allowance payments
If you care for someone at least 35 hours per week, then you might be able to get carer allowance. This pays £67.25 per week and you do not have to care for a relative or live with the person to get it.
Council tax help
This type of support is available to those who claim benefits or who are on a low income. It can be applied for whether you own your home, rent it, are working or do not have a job. Depending on your circumstances, you might get up to 100% off your bill.
